He came back, bless his heart, with groceries, and we had a salad and ate boiled shrimp, peeling them with our fingers and dipping them into cocktail sauce.

We had almost reached the end of Casablanca when Daniel’s cell phone buzzed. Before he could answer mine was ringing, too. He paused the movie.

I could see that mine was from Kylie and took the phone to the kitchen with me.

As it turned out, we both got the same news. Charley Granger had died.

I told Kylie I was sorry to hear that and agreed it must be hard on Angie, but added – “I’ve got company. Talk to you later.”

Daniel told Brenda Breaker that he was sorry to hear that, and, no, she didn’t need to keep him posted, since no crime had been committed. Then, we went back to watching Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

(No, we weren’t being callous. Daniel had never met Mr. Charley Granger, and I only remembered him as old man my father didn’t particularly like.)

After Casablanca, I cut slices of the store-bought lemon meringue pie he had brought, and we watched The African Queen.

After The African Queen, we talked a little about the investigation, which seemed to be completely stalled.

I told him what I had heard from Kylie about Laurel wanting to sell her furniture, and that I thought she planned to move.

“Sounds like it to me,” he said. “I’m not sure she even has a choice in the matter unless her parents are going to support her up here. Between us, Cody left her in kind of a mess financially. We looked into all that.”

“Let’s talk about something cheerful,” I said. “Tell me what you want Darlene to have on her menu for breakfast.”

“Biscuits with butter and strawberry jam,” he said. “Tell her I will eat there every morning if I can smell biscuits baking when I walk in.”

I made a mental note to ask Darlene to teach me how to bake biscuits like hers.
